Israel Storms Gaza City, Thousands Flee Amid Rising Death Toll

Published on:

Israel has commenced a significant ground offensive into Gaza City, deploying tanks and armored units to move deeper into areas still under Hamas control. The operation, which began on September 16, marks a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict that started in October 2023.

“Gaza Is Burning,” Israel Claims

Defense Minister Israel Katz declared “Gaza is burning” as Israeli forces stepped up their assault, targeting what they describe as Hamas’ terror infrastructure. According to military statements, two divisions are already operating on the ground inside Gaza City, with additional forces expected to join.

Widespread Displacement, Growing Death Toll

The humanitarian situation is worsening. Over 59 people were killed and 386 wounded in a 24-hour period, bringing the total death toll among Palestinians to nearly 65,000 since the conflict began. Thousands more civilians are fleeing as Israeli strikes and ground maneuvers ravage residential buildings and infrastructure. Communication blackouts and cuts to electricity compound the crisis, making rescue and evacuation efforts more difficult.

International Response: Condemnation and Concern

The offensive has drawn strong international criticism. A recent U.N. commission of inquiry accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza—a charge the Israeli government rejects. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, have condemned the attack, urging global institutions to intervene.

Political Undercurrents and Strategic Objectives

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that the objectives of the operation are to defeat Hamas, dismantle its control, and evacuate civilians from conflict zones. However, unlike previous statements, there was no mention of the release of Israeli hostages in his initial announcement, sparking protests from hostage families. Some Israeli military leaders have advised caution, citing concerns about high risks to both soldiers and remaining hostages.

Urgent Need for Humanitarian Aid

With hundreds of thousands displaced and essential supplies dwindling, humanitarian agencies are sounding alarms. Many evacuees are moving toward overcrowded camps in the southern parts of Gaza, where shelter, water, medical care, and food remain in short supply. The severe damage to infrastructure continues to hinder aid access.
