TET Exam Now Mandatory, 90,000 Teachers May Lost Their Jobs In West Bengal

In West Bengal, over 90,000 teachers now have to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). They must do this to maintain their job. Schools feel worried about the Supreme Court’s decision. Two actions are being taken by the state.

On September 1, 2025, the order was issued. Teachers who have more than five years of service left are eligible. Many people were hired without TET. This group included almost 90,000 teachers, as per the education department. They were given two years to pass by the court. The administration is working on two plans. Following the Kali Puja vacations, it will first submit a review petition to the Supreme Court. This asks for permits for teachers who were hired before to the 2010–11 NCTE announcement. Second, in the case that the petition is denied, officials are getting ready for a special TET exam.

Districts have been ordered to provide a list of teachers who have failed the TET by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE). This supports the legal argument and assists in exam planning. Teachers are under stress. They must teach daily and study for a tough test. The state aims finding a balance between exam preparation and legal action. Similar problems exist in other states. A review petition was filed by Uttar Pradesh. Next year, Tamil Nadu wants to implement a three-phase TET.

The next several weeks are crucial. Teachers wait for clarification. They wish for time to pass or a legal solutions. While following to the court decision, the government is working to protect teachers.
