Cyclone Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall In Tamil Nadu Due To Twin Storm

Published on:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains and the possible formation of twin cyclones over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, which could impact Tamil Nadu’s Diwali celebrations. 18 districts, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, and Villupuram, are under a heavy rain alert for Diwali, according to the IMD. Over the coming days, the rain, which is already falling in a number of areas, is forecast to get stronger.

Officials predict that a major storm over the Arabian Sea will shortly grow into a cyclonic cyclone. By October 21, a new low-pressure system that is building over the southeast Bay of Bengal may also turn into a major storm. A high alert has been issued for the whole state because to this uncommon twin weather trend. Between October 23 and 24, the IMD forecasts significant heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern and western areas. Considerable rain is predicted for Chennai today, with more intense rainfall predicted for tomorrow and October 23.

Residents have been advised by authorities to avoid low-lying areas and remain indoors during periods of extreme weather. Local governments have been instructed to keep an eye on the water levels in rivers and reservoirs, and disaster management teams are on standby across coastal areas. This Diwali may be one of the wettest celebrations in Tamil Nadu in recent memory if both weather systems increase as predicted. An Orange Alert has been issued by the IMD, alerting people to the chance of more than 20 cm of rain in several areas and a possibility of high winds near the coast.
