Uma Dasgupta, the actress who played the role of Durga in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali passes away. She was suffering for a long period of time with a critical illness. Acor Chiranjeet Chakraborty confirmed her demise at 8 am on 18th November.

One of the most iconic films by Satyajit Ray was Pather Panchali. Uma Dasgupta played the role of Apu’s elder sister Durga in the film. She gained immense fame for her acting but never returned to acting after this movie. The Bengali movie industry expresses grief as the news of her demise spreads.
Confirmation of Demise
Actor Chiranjeet Chakraborty said Uma Dasgupta’s daughter confirmed her death. She also told the actress that she had been suffering from cancer for a long time. Initially, she was responding to the treatment. But the situation worsened again and she was admitted to a private hospital. She breathed her last there.

Uma Dasgupta used to perform in theaters from a very young age. Her school headmaster knew director Satyajit Ray. He helped Satyajit to discover Uma Dasgupta. Though her father didn’t want her to act in cinema, the director made her family agree and the movie was praised by everyone till now. And she will be remembered though her work for eternity.
