Banaraswala Raises $2 Million In Seed Funding From Prax Impex To Scale To 50 Outlets

Banaraswala, a food brand built around the culinary traditions of Banaras, has raised USD 2 million, or about Rs 17.6 crore, in a seed funding round from Prax Impex Private Limited. The company operates under the tagline Ghat Se Ghar Tak and serves traditional Banarasi sweets, chaats and meals.

The round is a single-investor seed raise, a structure that is common for food and beverage brands at an early stage. Banaraswala did not disclose its valuation or the size of the stake that Prax Impex has picked up.

The funding and the investors

Prax Impex Private Limited put in the full USD 2 million, according to the company. Rajnandini, a shareholder at Prax Impex, said the firm was drawn to the opportunity to build a modern food brand around something that already carries deep cultural relevance.

She said founder Vibhanshu Mishra has an impressive understanding of numbers and the market, and that the firm believes Banaraswala can move beyond being a regional food business to becoming a recognisable Indian food brand.

Use of funds

The capital will go into expanding the brand’s outlets, adding new menu offerings and growing its franchise network across India. A part of the money will also be used to strengthen operations, the team and internal processes as Banaraswala enters new markets.

Mishra said scaling the brand is also an effort to build trust in its original ethos. He said the company seeks to take the flavours and recipes of Banaras to an untapped marketplace without deviating from their authentic nature. The investment, he added, will help build a stronger foundation across products, outlets, people and processes.

From three Delhi outlets to 50

Banaraswala runs three outlets across Delhi today. It has already named its next markets: Banswara in Rajasthan, Sarangpur in Gujarat, and Farrukhabad and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, with launches planned through October and November 2026.

The larger target is 50 outlets by March 2027. That expansion will cover Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi NCR and other Tier 2 markets through a mix of company-owned and franchise-operated stores. The brand says it will also strengthen its existing locations while adding new ones.

The focus on Tier 2 cities is deliberate. Rents and competition are lower there than in the metros, and regional food formats tend to travel well in cities where the cuisine is already familiar.

The menu and the business model

Banaraswala positions itself in the quick-service restaurant segment and also works on what the company calls Banarasi molecular cuisine. Its menu covers traditional Banarasi sweets, chaats and meals, and the brand builds traditional elements such as kulhads, pattal and clay into the way its food is served.

The brand also sells through major online food delivery platforms, which extends its reach beyond its own store footprint. That mix of dine-in, delivery and franchise is central to how the company plans to grow.

Background and the founder

Banaraswala was founded by Vibhanshu Mishra and is built around the food culture of Varanasi. The brand has described its earlier phase as a period that brought hard lessons, and Mishra calls the current expansion a comeback with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear intent to move ahead.

What happens next

The immediate task is execution. Fast franchise expansion in food retail depends on consistent taste, dependable supply and unit economics that hold up at scale. Banaraswala will have to keep those together across several new states while the clock runs towards its March 2027 target.
