UPI Processes Record 25.47 Billion Payments In October

India’s Unified Payments Interface processed a record 25.47 billion transactions worth Rs 31.53 lakh crore in October, monthly data released by the National Payments Corporation of India on 1 November shows. Average daily value crossed Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time, at Rs 1.01 lakh crore, and average daily volume touched a high of 822 million payments.

The festival calendar did much of the work. Navratri and Durga Puja fell in October and the big ecommerce festive sales opened in the same month, so shoppers used the network for daily groceries and for bigger festive buys. NPCI’s daily series peaks at 873 million payments on 9 October, the weekend before Navratri, stays elevated through 19 October, a day before Dussehra, then settles.

The Numbers Behind The Record

The month-on-month gain was 5.8 per cent in volume over September’s 24.07 billion and 7.4 per cent in value over Rs 29.37 lakh crore, with one extra day in the month. Even on a per-day basis, volume rose to 822 million from 802 million and value to Rs 1.01 lakh crore from Rs 97,913 crore. Year on year, payments grew 23 per cent from 20.7 billion and value 16 per cent from Rs 27.27 lakh crore.

The two rates diverge because the average payment is shrinking. Rs 31.53 lakh crore spread across 25.47 billion transactions is about Rs 1,238 a payment, against Rs 1,317 a year earlier and Rs 1,220 in September. Cashfree co-founder Reeju Datta told Business Standard the ticket size has now risen for two straight months after shrinking through most of the year.

A Record Year, With A September Pause

October recovers ground lost in September, when volume slipped to 24.07 billion from 24.51 billion in August and value to Rs 29.37 lakh crore from Rs 29.82 lakh crore. The run before it was relentless: UPI crossed 23 billion monthly payments for the first time in May at 23.2 billion, reached 23.66 billion in July and set a then-record in August.

September’s pause had a price story behind it. Smartphone, laptop and appliance prices climbed 30 to 40 per cent in recent months, partly on a spike in memory chip costs, and ET reported on 19 October that Amazon’s Great Indian Festival and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days were running 10 to 12 per cent below the year-ago period. October grew anyway.

The MDR Question Is Still Open

The record lands while the network’s economics stay unsettled. The UPI and services steering committee decided on 13 October to push the merchant discount rate past Diwali, from an original 15 October start, and has notified no new date. The framework allows 0.4 per cent on specified person-to-merchant payments above Rs 2,000, capped at Rs 300 for transactions of Rs 75,000 and above; transfers between people and merchant payments up to Rs 2,000 are exempt.

That exemption is the heart of the argument. Most UPI volume carries no fee for the merchant, so banks and payment companies absorb the cost of switching, disputes and fraud. Industry executives used the record month to repeat that the system needs a sustainable revenue model, Business Standard reported, a case that gets louder at festive peaks.

Three Apps, One Market

Competition is concentrated. In September, PhonePe handled 45.6 per cent of UPI volume, Google Pay 32.2 per cent and Paytm 8.1 per cent, about 86 per cent of listed-app transactions together; the October split is not out yet. Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma told the company’s Q2 FY27 earnings call that it is targeting a third of the consumer payments market.

The record month settles who carries UPI, not who earns from it. Scale in a free base transaction pays off mainly through adjacent lending, insurance and merchant services, which is why the pending MDR notification matters more than another billion payments does.

What To Watch In November

November brings the heavier end of the season. Dhanteras and Diwali both fall in the month, and Akshay Mehrotra, managing director of digital lender Fibe, told ET that such occasions lift higher-value purchases in gold and other traditional categories, which could bring value growth closer to volume growth.

The editorial read is that October is a demand signal, not a policy verdict. 25.47 billion payments in a month, about 9,500 a second at the daily average, and an annualised run rate near Rs 378 lakh crore mark a network that has become routine plumbing. But volume growing 23 per cent while value grows 16 per cent says the newest users spend in small amounts, where zero-fee economics strain.
