The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) opened online registration on October 24 for 17,735 Assistant Teacher posts, the trained graduate teacher (TGT) rung of the state’s aided secondary schools. The advertisement splits the vacancies between 16,193 posts in boys’ schools and 1,542 in girls’ schools. Two companion advertisements for headmasters and principals are already live, which takes the full recruitment cycle to 20,382 posts. The TGT written examination will be held on December 23 and 24.
The subject-wise spread matters more than the headline number for anyone choosing a paper. Hindi carries the largest share at 2,791 posts, followed by English with 2,517, Science with 2,493, Social Science with 2,482 and Mathematics with 2,349. Those five subjects account for 12,632 of the 17,735 posts, leaving 5,103 spread across the remaining subjects. The parallel leadership advertisements cover 1,172 headmaster posts and 1,475 principal posts, again divided between boys’ and girls’ institutions.

Dates, fees and the one-time registration step
The TGT window is short by recruitment standards. Applications opened on October 24 and the fee must be paid by November 23, with corrections allowed until November 26. Headmaster and principal applicants, who could start on October 23, have to pay by November 22 and can make corrections until November 25, while their examination is scheduled for January 7, 2027. The fee is Rs 1,000 for general, OBC and EWS candidates, Rs 500 for SC and ST candidates and Rs 300 for persons with disabilities. Every applicant must first complete One Time Registration on the UPESSC portal, a step the commission says was introduced for easier applications and a transparent process.
The paper itself rewards accuracy over attempts. Candidates face 120 multiple choice questions, 30 on general knowledge and 90 on the chosen subject, with three marks for a correct answer and a one mark penalty for a wrong or multiple response, for a total of 360. The question paper is bilingual except for language subjects. TGT selection is decided on the written merit list alone, with no interview, followed by document verification. Headmaster and principal candidates face a 400 mark total, made up of the same 360 mark written paper and a 40 mark interview.

Who is eligible for these posts
For TGT posts a candidate needs a bachelor’s degree with at least 50 per cent marks in the relevant subject, or a postgraduate degree with 45 per cent, plus a B.Ed or an equivalent qualification recognised by the NCTE and a TET or CTET pass at the upper primary level. The age band runs from 21 to 62 years as on July 1, 2026. Headmaster and principal applicants need a minimum age of 30 and at least four years of teaching experience in classes 9 to 12, or four years as a headmaster in a junior high school or high school. The advertised pay scale for assistant teachers is Rs 44,900 to Rs 1,42,400.
Why a 20,382 post cycle matters
Scale is the story here. Uttar Pradesh runs one of the country’s largest school systems, and a single cycle of this size moves more teachers into classrooms than most states hire in several years. The design also shows what the commission is optimising for: one registration identity, a bilingual paper, negative marking and, for TGT, no interview, which together shorten the distance between advertisement and appointment.
Analysis: the calendar is compressed. The TGT advertisement gives applicants roughly a month to pay and two months to prepare, and its exam dates sit weeks before the leadership papers. That pace favours candidates who have already cleared TET and keep their documents ready, and it leaves little room for the extensions that usually follow a large notification.
Risks and what to watch
Two things can still move. The notification states that the number of vacancies may increase or decrease, so the subject-wise split published this week is not final. Separately, the Samajwadi Party has questioned the reservation rules used in this secondary teacher recruitment, and the commission chairman has answered the charge publicly, according to Dainik Bhaskar. Any correction to the roster would change which posts are open to whom. Candidates should also treat the fee deadline as the real cutoff, because the commission has said that payment alone does not complete an application. Watch the commission’s site for the correction windows, the admit card schedule and any revision of the vacancy list before December.
