Uttar Pradesh’s first primary school teacher recruitment in eight years has drawn more than 7 lakh applications for 12,405 posts, according to figures reported on 30 October, and the window is still open. The seats are fixed. The queue outside them is the story.
The vacancies are split between 11,508 posts in urban council schools under the Basic Education Department and 897 assistant teacher posts in aided secondary schools. UPESSC is running the drive as Advertisement No. 05/2026, and it is the first intake for these primary posts since 2018, so trained graduates from several years are now competing inside one advertisement.

The application schedule has already moved twice. The window now closes on 4 November, and forms that need repair can be corrected until 7 November. The written examination has not shifted and stays scheduled for 3 and 4 December.
The extension followed an Allahabad High Court order on 24 October and a letter from the state’s Secondary Education Department three days later, according to the commission’s notice dated 28 October. The same notice widened the eligible list, which should push the applicant count higher before the deadline.

Why This Cycle Has Drawn Such A Crowd
Teaching is the largest regular white collar hiring channel the state government runs, and an eight year pause left a backlog of candidates holding the required degrees. With four days still left to apply, the final figure will be higher than the 7 lakh counted on 29 October. Applications are filed at apply.upessc.org, the commission’s own portal.
Every year of that pause added a fresh graduating class of B.Ed and BTC holders to the pool, and none of them had a primary vacancy to apply for until this advertisement. That is why the applicant count looks out of proportion to 12,405 seats: the post is competing with a backlog, not with one year of pass-outs.
The revised eligibility pulls in two more groups. A two year Diploma in Education (Special Education) approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India now qualifies, and so does a four year Bachelor of Elementary Education degree. Both were added under the court order and the state government’s directions, not by the commission on its own.
The Arithmetic Behind The Headline
Reported coverage puts the ratio at about 47 applicants per post, which is the number you get by spreading 7 lakh forms across 15,012 seats, meaning the 12,405 primary posts plus 2,607 PGT posts. Measured against the primary seats alone, the same pool works out to roughly 56 candidates for every vacancy.
Analysis: that gap is the real story. It shows how narrow the market for stable salaried work remains for trained graduates, and it means the December paper will do almost all of the filtering. For the state, a queue of this size is also a reminder that recruitment freezes do not reduce demand for teaching jobs, they only pile it up.
What Candidates Should Do Before 4 November
Anyone still applying should check the degree they plan to use against Advertisement No. 05/2026 and not an older notice, because the eligible list changed this week. Submitted forms deserve a re-read before 7 November, when the correction window shuts, since spelling and date of birth errors are the commonest reason a candidature fails at verification.
The rest of the state’s teaching pipeline runs in parallel. UPESSC is also filling 17,735 TGT posts, 1,475 principal posts and 1,172 headmaster posts, a combined 20,382 vacancies, with applications open until 23 November. Candidates who qualify for more than one post should treat 4 November and 23 November as separate deadlines and use both.
Timing is the other pressure. Between the 4 November deadline and the 3 December paper there are about four weeks, which is short for anyone starting revision now, and the correction window is the last point at which category and reservation details can be fixed. Candidates who leave those to the verification stage usually cannot repair them at all.
What To Watch
The final count after 4 November will show how much the widened eligibility and the extra week added. No second stage has been announced, so the December written test and the document check after it will settle the selection list. For an applicant, the only figure that matters this week is the one printed on the form they submit.
